In Hen, the hand-held camera tracks the protagonist down as she loses herself along a dark path of criminal underworld, inescapable poverty and gender unfairness. By contrast, her little girl’s wide-eyed innocence provides the audience with an emotional tether that almost balances out this raw display of social determinism and injustice. Life sure is a bitch.
